Environmental sustainability must serve as a guideline for development, responding to the planet’s increasingly urgent need for change.
Objectives of the project
Ensuring sustainability today is a whole-company process and requires a green review of all aspects of energy consumption, the use of resources and production efficiency.
It is in this context that the Parmacotto Group has signed up to the Science-Based Targets Initiative, the global initiative to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG) in line with the level of decarbonisation required to keep the global temperature increase less than two degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial temperatures.
"This important element defines the scope of our sustainability strategy, which, in addition to the environmental dimension, also considers the economic and social dimension from a shared sense of all-round well-being: making people feel good is our commitment for the present and the future. - Andrea Schivazappa, Chief Executive Officer of the Parmacotto Group.
Despite the new focus on the need to mitigate climate change and the measures imposed on governments and businesses, total emissions from anthropogenic greenhouse gases continue to rise. According to current trends, average global temperatures are expected to rise by between 3.7°C and 4.8°C by the end of this century, well above the levels of warming that the international scientific community has identified as safe.
If we consider that most global GHG emissions are directly or indirectly influenced by the corporate sector, companies must play a clear role in climate protection and ensure that transitioning to a low-carbon economy becomes feasible.
The move to adopt SBTs is a concrete commitment to combating the dangerous climate change currently under way, as well as a decisive step towards reducing the company’s supply-chain carbon emissions. And there is more: it also represents a competitive advantage in the transition to a low-emission economy. This advantage can lead to the environmental analysis and validation of production processes, but also to the identification of areas in which to make improvements and boost efficiency (environmental efficiency primarily, but consequently economic as well).
Leveraging the development of new technologies and operational practices to increase competitiveness in a future in which resources will become increasingly expensive – particularly those derived from fossil fuels – remains the goal to strive for. This is why the Parmacotto Group has chosen to pave the way for a zero-carbon economy, stimulating innovation and driving sustainable growth through science-based targets for reducing emissions.
Because building long-term business value means safeguarding the future for everyone.
