Community well being

"A scuola di cotto": learning about cooked ham

Learning good habits by playing: our project of eating education

Learning healthy eating through play, to create a social and cultural engagement programme that promotes healthy lifestyles and proper nutrition, training future adults to become conscious consumers.

Objectives of the project

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

We believe that quality education is the basis for improving people’s well-being and achieving appropriate and concrete learning outcomes. We want to help ensure equity in education through social and educational integration projects, eliminating inequality and ensuring access to all levels of education and training.

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

We want to bolster efforts to protect and safeguard the cultural, artistic and social heritage of the communities in which we operate, conscious that the challenges can be met by improving inclusion and reducing poverty and social inequality. We envisage a future with welcoming, open and inclusive communities that offer opportunities for all.

This is the goal of “A Scuola di Cotto”, the project developed by the Parmacotto Group’s Educational Division and sponsored by the Province of Parma.

How do you recognise high-quality cooked ham?

What are the guidelines for storing it?

The programme answers these and other questions by teaching the principles of food culture through workshops designed specifically for primary school children.  In a nutshell: learning through play.

The “A Scuola di Cotto” project aims to support the development of its young participants, encouraging their growing independence in taking a conscious approach to nutrition, including through first-hand experience of the emotions that food can elicit.

A scuola di Cotto: imparare le buone abitudini alimentari giocando

Taking a playful approach, programme facilitators lead these small “travellers” on an educational pathway that starts with the production phases of cooked ham and ends with the discovery and analysis of the basic principles of a healthy diet and proper nutrition.

For the first part of their journey, the children will visit the factory and follow the production line (from raw materials to the finished tray), before discovering the slicing and packaging phases.

This is followed by an animated video that simply and clearly explains the production phases of cooked ham. Last but not least, the children will participate in a sensory analysis workshop (created in collaboration with the Centro Studi Assaggiatori di Brescia), playing interactive games designed to stimulate the senses. The experience ends with guidelines on enjoying the product, from storing to serving.
